Many may have heard the name Geeta Phogat only after watching the trailer of Aamir Khan’s Dangal, but the spunky girl herself is no stranger to fame and glory. Geeta was the first female wrestler from India to bag gold for the country, after pouching the medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She’s also the first ever woman from India to have qualified for the Olympics. (Also watch: The rousing trailer of Dangal.)
Recognizing her status as a sportsperson of international repute, and also acknowledging the fact that she’s well educated with a graduate degree, the State Government of Haryana, from where she hails, has appointed Geeta as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for the state. A proposal for the same was recently approved at a state cabinet meeting headed by Haryana’s CM, Manohar Lal khattar.
Dangal, which release later this year highlights the story of Geeta and her sister Babita, and how they were coached by their father, former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, with single-minded focus and against all odds.
