We had a look at the box-office winners in the first quarter of 2016 in my previous article. Now it’s time to catch up with the first quarter’s films (in the order of their release) which unanimously won appreciation for their content. Some of these films thankfully also went on to emerge as box-office successes.
Kathakali – This Vishal – Pandiraj action thriller was appreciated for its focused 2nd half without any songs and fillers. The film could have done much better had it been released in a better window.
Irudhi Suttru – This emotional sports drama was among the few films which had its share of brilliant reviews and fat collection figures too. A one of a kind spectacle for sure.
Visaaranai – Vetri Maaran delivered a no holds barred take on how police investigations work. The film was brutal and proved that the system is all-pervasive and doesn’t spare anyone.
Sethupathi – Arun Kumar showed that he had the sensibilities for a mass cop-villain action story and also the endearing family drama. Vijay Sethupathi charmed the viewer, as the cop / family man.
Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum – Nalan Kumarasamy followed up his cult first film with the leisurely paced rom-com, Ka Ka Po. The lead pair and the film’s technicalities were lauded and a few even felt that the film was a step better than its Korean original.
Thozha – Director Vamshy was much appreciated for the way he adapted a French classic to suit local sensibilities. The Karthi – Nagarjuna bromance clicked big time on screen, and both of them won over the audience with their contrasting performances.
Zero – Debut director Shiv Mohaa stunned critics and hardcore film buffs with an out of the world good vs evil tale. His story had strong Biblical references and the technical team backed this fantasy script with some solid work.
Expecting more content-rich films in the current quarter when some really high profile films are waiting in the wings.
