The best Bollywood thrillers with a bold touch

feature

Cinema has been synonymous with the thriller genre, and Bollywood is no different. Right from the 50s to modern times, Hindi films have seen a spate of suspenseful tales that have kept audiences on the edge of their seats. However, unlike western and oriental cinema, Bollywood filmmakers haven’t been known to push the envelope too far and venture into bolder territory, at least not the good ones. Yes, thrillers courting the risqué are available a dime a dozen, particularly since the turn of the new millennium, but how many among them can really be remembered as solid mysteries that struck a fine balance between suspense and sensationalism?

So, let’s comb through those Bollywood thrillers that were as suspenseful as they were bold, minus all the sleaze. And when we say bold, we mean the themes that were showcased rather than the skin that was shown because what could be bolder than pushing the envelope toward unprecedented horizons.

1.) Murder

Perhaps, the gold standard for bold thrillers in Bollywood – Murder didn’t just have Mallika Sherawat in all her sizzling glory, but was bold because it smartly played with the subject of infidelity. Plus, the suspense was kept on a knife’s edge throughout.

2.) Murder 2

Though inspired from the Korean film, The Chaser; Murder 2 was a neat thriller in its own right, prudently adapted to Indian tastes, with a diabolic murderer and a gutsy Emraan Hashmi hot on his heels.

3.) Kalyug

Kalyug dived deep into the muck of flesh trade, human trafficking, and hidden cameras targeting gullible victims to come up with the right balance of thought provocation and adrenaline pulsation. The Bhatts do know how to get bold with their thrillers.

4.) Raman Raghav 2.0

A psychotic killer that not only bashed his victims’ brains in, but doesn’t even think twice about raping his own sister and slaughtering her with her family in his thirst for murder and mayhem – this film surely had many squirming in their seats even as the tension kept ratcheting up.

5.) Jism

The audience kept thronging the theaters to see Bipasha Basu and John Abaham turn up the steam, and they kept coming away with a mystery that was riddled with unpredictable twists and turns.

6.) Right Yaa Wrong

Sunny Deol of all actors stars in this extremely underrated gem – alongside Irrfan Khan and Konkana Sen Sharma – as a paralyzed ex-cop implicated in the murder of his unfaithful wife, who’s been sleeping with none other than his brother.

7.) Naqaab

A film that really uncovers the effects of hidden cameras, with Bobby Deol, Akshaye Khanna, and Urvashi Sharma all complicit in a dirty game.

8.) Zakhmi Aurat

Dimple Kapadia shines in this film as an ex-cop, who quits the forces, to exact bloody, castrating revenge on her perpetrators.

9.) Red Rose

A film that was way ahead of its times, evident by the very fact that Rajesh Khanna – a popular romantic star of his era – was cast as a deranged serial killer, who kept raping, butchering, and burying nubile women in his backyard.

10.) Aksar

Anant Mahadevan, with the help of a gamely Emraan Hashmi and Udita Goswami, displayed his dexterity and weaving a sizzling, nail-biting mystery in Aksar.
