Despite the big cricket match last evening, Sui Dhaaga still managed to open well at the box-office. Riding on the some good reviews, mostly positive word-of-mouth, and Varun Dhawan’s star power, the film brought in Rs. 8.30 crore nett on day one, which is more than a good opening, given that the Asia Cup final, featuring India and Bangladesh, ate into a huge chuck of its business during the evening and night shows.
The opening is similar to films like Pad Man and Raid this year after factoring in the cricket match, and those films had wider releases in the domestic market. Plus, the match was extremely tight, which further kept away the family audience from theaters all over India. Had it not been for the see-saw nature of the match, the Varun Dhawan-Anushka Sharma starrer could have collected at least 1-1.5 crore more from its night shows. The start during the morning shows was also quite low, which affected the day-one total to an extent.
Sui Dhaaga is expected to grow well over the weekend, going by early reports from theaters today. But business should also remain at high levels during the evening and night shows on Monday, and then witness a bug jump on day five (Tuesday), owing to the big Gandhi Jayanti festival. The film has begun on a promising note at the box-office, and should do well in the long run if it succeeds in tapping into the family audience.
