Shahid Kapoor: Biography

special

Shahid Kapoor is one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood today. Son of actors Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, Shahid was born in Mumbai on 25th February, 1981.At the age of three, Shahid was taken to Delhi by his mother when she separated from Pankaj Kapoor.

When Shahid was 10, he moved back to Mumbai with his mother when she married actor Rajesh Khattar. Till date, the name of Shahid’s passport is Shahid Khattar. He has one half-brother Ishaan Khattar, and two half-sisters.

From an early age, Shahid had a keen interest in dance, and joined Shiamak Davar’s institute of performing arts when he was 15. He was also a part of Shiamak’s dance troupe and was seen as a background dancer with Aishwarya in Taal. As a child, he has also featured in Bournvita commercial with Ayesha Takia.

As a teenager, Shahid has once accompanied a friend for an audition for an ad, and got the part himself and featured in a commercial with SRK and Rani Mukherjee. Later on, he appeared in a hugely successful music video, 'Aankhon Main Tera hi Chehra’.

Debut (2003)

In 2000, Shahid approached Ramesh Taurani for a role, but the producer asked him to bulk up a little more and return after a few years. Eventually, in 2003, Taurani cast Shahid in Ishq Vishk which was directed by Ken Ghosh. The film also starred Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasury and became a sleeper hit.

Even though the film was a hit and Shahid received appreciation for his performance as well, his subsequent films Fida, Dil Maange More, Life Ho Toh Aisi all tanked at the Box Office.

Reclaiming the Box Office (2006)

Post a string of flops, Shahid did two consecutive films with Kareena Kapoor, 36 China Town and Chup Chup Ke, whom he was dating at that time. Chup Chup Ke did not do any wonders, but 26 China Town went on to become Shahid’s second hit. He then got the real taste of success with films like Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivaah and Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met.

While Shahid finally found professional footing in 2007, his long term relationship with Kareena ended in the same year.

This 2009, Shahid had delivered decent number of hits, but he had not been able to break out of his chocolate boy image by that time. However, that changed in 2009, with his double role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey. His portrayal of characters with lisp and stutter got a thumbs up from harshest of critics, and pitted him as a performer to watch out for.

In 2011, Kapoor starred in Pankaj Kapoor’s Directorial venture Mausam, and focussed on that single film for two years, and spent a lot of time getting in skin of his character. But sadly, even that film did not do well. After another string of flops, Shahid’s commercial appeal was being questioned. But then he acted in Prabhudeva’s R Rajkumar. The film was ripped apart by critics, but went on to become Shahid’s highest grosser ever.

After the success of Kaminey, Shahid worked with Vishal Bharadwaj in Haider and Rangoon. While Rangoon was a flop, Haider did fairly well and won roaring applause from the audience and critics alike. Shahid also won a lot of appreciation and awards for his portrayal of a drug addict in Udta Punjab.

Shahid will be seen next in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, which also stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
