If there was ever any doubt that Sachin Tendulkar’s popularity may have dwindled since his retirement from cricket four years ago, this the recently released documentary on his life should dispel all such misgivings. Sachin: A Billion Dreams has not only surpassed every trade analyst’s expectation by collecting a stupendous Rs. 8.60 crore nett on day one, but has also beaten the opening-day figures of many of 2017’s major Bollywood releases, starring huge stars. Basically, Sachin Tendulkar has turned back the clock and started another innings of his in scintillating fashion.

The signs for a big opening were there from the morning shows itself as the film opened to a fantastic 40% occupancy rate again, much better than many feature-film releases this year but not even in their wildest dreams could anyone predicted it to post such a huge number. However, as the glowing reviews started pouring in and the positive word-of-mouth began spreading like wild fire, the film grew exponentially as the day passed on.
Last year, another biopic on a universally loved cricketer, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, had also taken a much-larger-than-expected opening, but that was a proper, commercial feature film. For a documentary film to post such numbers is nothing short of a mind-boggling achievement, and a true testament of its eponymous subject’s God-like status in India. To put it candidly, the day one collection of Sachin: A Billion Dreams is akin to one of those breathtaking sixes the Little Master used to wallop out of the stadium. If the film grows further over the weekend, it’ll have every chance of posting a huge lifetime total.
