Priyanka Chopra: Biography

Born on 18th July, 1982, Priyanka Chopra is the daughter of Dr, Ashok Chopra and Dr Madhu Chopra. Since both her parents were doctors in the Army, Priyanka lived in quite a few cities as a child; Leh, Bareilly, Jamshedpur, Ambala, Delhi, Pune to name a few. However, the actress considers Bareilly as her home town. She has a younger brother, named Siddharth Chopra, and her cousins, Parineeti Chopra and Meera Chopra are actresses as well.


At the age of 13, Priyanka shifted base to USA for education and started living with her aunt. Even in US, she lived in various states like Massachusetts, Iowa and New York. While in US, she also studies western classical music and worked with various theatre productions. After three years, she returned to India and finished her schooling in Army Public School, Bareilly.

Crowned as the queen of beauty – year 2000

In her last year in school, she won the May Queen beauty contest and participated in the Miss India contest in in year 2000, where she was the first runner up. After that she participated in Miss World contest in London and was crowned as the winner, despite giving a factually incorrect answer.

Debut and making a mark in the industry 2002 - 2004

Priyanka Chopra was supposed to make her debut with Abbas – Mustan’s Humraaz, but for undisclosed reasons, the deal went awry. She made her onscreen debut in Tamil film, Thamizhan opposite Vijay. Priyanka made her Bollywood debut in Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta starrer The Hero: Love story of a spy, followed by Andaaz with Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. Both the films did well and Priyanka found a strong foothold in Bollwyood.

In 2004, she did various films like Kismat, Plan, but it was the Akshay – Salman starrer Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Aitraaz, which also starred Akshay, which made Priyanka one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood.

Ruling the Industry – 2005 – 2014

After establishing herself as one of the top actresses, PC had a string of flops from 2007 to 2008, but the actress bounced back with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, for which she also won a National Award. After Fashion, her roles in Tarun Mansukhani’s Dostana and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey were also appreciated.

She then went on to play 12 characters in Ashutosh Gowariker’s romcom, What’s your Raashee, and became the first actor ever to play that many characters in one film. Priyanka also played the role of a femme fatale in Vishal Bhardwaj’s black comedy, 7 Khoon Maaf and featured opposite Shah Rukh Khan in  Farhan Akhtar’s Don 1 and 2. Another landmark film of Priyanka’s career was Anurag Basu’s Barfi!, in which she starred opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

In 2014, Priyanka played Mary Kom in the biopic on the Olympic medallist and 5 times world champion. The film was directed by Omung Kumar, and Priyanka received several award nominations for the film. In 2015, PC worked in Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. She was last seen in Bollywood in Jai Gangaajal, which released in 2016.

In 2016, PC also launched her production house, Purple pebble pictures, with her mother, Madhu Chopra. They have produced 5 films in 4 different languages, and won three National awards for Marathi film titled ventilator.

It is said that Priyanka is in talks with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Sahir Ludhianvi biopic.

Conquering Hollywood

In 2012, Priyanka made her singing debut with her first single, In My City, which was received well by the audience. In July 2013, she released her second single with rapper Pitbull. In 2015, she signed a deal with ABC studios to star in the lead role in their television series, Quantico. PC was the first South Asian to play a lead role in an American series and she is currently shooting for its third season. She also played the main Antagonist in Baywatch, which also starred Dwayne Johnson. The film did not do well, but PC received decent reviews for her role. She was also a presenter at the Academy Awards, 2016.

She will be seen next in A Kid Like Jake which also stars Jim Parsons of Big Bang Theory Fame and a romcom titled isn’t it romantic.
