Pataakha marks another outing for a film receiving ubiquitous praise form the critics, but being rejected by the audience. The film has opened to extremely poor numbers, collecting a mere Rs. 90 lakh nett on day one, marking yet another failure for Director Vishal Bhardwaj at the box-office. From such a low start, it’s nigh impossible for any film to reverse its fortunes, even if the jumps over the rest of the weekend are double or triple-fold.
The Sanya Malhotra-Radhika Madan starrer has fared better than the openings of recent niche films like Manto, Mitron, and Love Sonia – which had also received glowing reviews but failed to click with audiences – but it still isn’t good enough to offer any hope in the long run, especially considering that the landing cost of Rs. 20 crore is far higher than the other films mentioned here.

It’s time that makers of such offbeat film woke up and found alternative avenues like Netflix and Amazon to release their projects, which will definitely minimize losses and maximize visibility, in turn, resulting in better revenue. Such films are no doubt made with a lot of effort, love, and conviction, and also no doubt have an audience. But that audience is not to be found in theaters.
