Vijay’s Mersal is undountedly the most-anticipated Kollywood release this Diwali, if not one-of-the-most anticipated Diwali releases across industries, on par with any big-ticket film from any other industry. So, what if you were to learn that the film’s release could be stalled. Well, brace yourself for some extreme disappointment because that’s exactly what may happen.
If you’re a regular Kollywood moviegoer, then you would know that all theaters across Tamil Nadu are currently on strike on account of the recent entertainment levied by the state government in addition to the already existing GST. With no other alternative other than the unfeasible one of giving into the astronomical new tax bracket, theaters all over the state have stopped screening new films, resorting to multiple reruns of recently released movies like Karuppan, Hara Hara Mahadevaki, and SPYder, along with re-screenings of other popular older movies.
In such a scenario, Mersal’s grand and eagerly awaited Diwali release could get postponed if a resolution isn’t soon met between the exhibitor’s (theater owners) association and the state government. Talks are currently on, and a decision should be reached anytime soon. But if resolution isn’t deemed feasible enough by the exhibitors, then Mersal could, in all likelihood, be postponed.
Fingers crossed that the Tamil Nadu government realizes their error of their ways and reduces the unreasonable burden they’ve straddled on the exhibitors, and, in turn, the entire film industry. Without Mersal, Diwali will be very dull for movie-buffs, Vijay fan or not.
