Neither any political controversy nor competition at the box-office could slow Mersal down from making it an absolutely bumper Diwali for its makers. After opening to smashing numbers, the Thalapathy Vijay starrer continued along more or less the same path to take full advantage of its extended 5-day Diwali weekend with a fantastic gross collection of Rs. 148 crore. The film has also held fantastically from over the weekdays to take hitherto worldwide gross to a mind-boggling Rs. 175.70 crore in just seven days with over 90 crore coming from the state of Tamil Nadu alone.
|Circuit-Wise||Gross Collection (INR)|
|Tamil Nadu||91.0 crore|
|Rest of India||4 crore|
|Rest of the World||16.70 crore|
For Mersal to have performed this way in spite of its other dubbed versions releasing only from this week onward speaks volumes of positive the word-of-mouth is, and also of Vijay’s star-power, who has now delivered his third 150-crore grosser after Kaththi and Theri. If anything, the entire controversy created by the BJP over the GST and demonetization dialogues in the film looks to have worked in its favor as it gained nationwide traction after that.

Many trade analysts are predicting Mersal to be Vijay’s first 200-crore grosser, and the way it’s marching on at the box-office, it could be only a matter of days before it achieves the feat, which will make it the sixth Kollywood movie overall (after Kabali, Enthiran, I, Vishwaroopam, and Dasavatharam) to reach the milestone.
