We had earlier reported that Director A.R. Murugadoss had announced the release date of his Tamil-Telugu bilingual with Mahesh Babu on Twitter. The film, tentatively titled Mahesh 23, is all set to release on 23rd June 2017, which is bang during the festival of Eid, putting it on a direct collision course with Salman Khan’s upcoming war film, Tubelight.
As we all know, Salman has made the Eid release period his own, after delivering several blockbuster during the festival. In fact, his last two Eid releases – Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan – both grossed over Rs. 300 crore at the domestic box-office alone. Plus, the audience is keenly awaiting the return of the Salman Khan-Kabir Khan combo.
On the other hand, one can’t overlook Mahesh Babu’s star-power, especially in the South. His Srimanthudu is the biggest Telugu hit after Baahubali: The Beginning, and the actor has also delivered several other blockbusters, not to mention being the only Telugu actor to have six films gross over a million dollars in the US. This time he’s collaborating with Murugadoss – one of the most-celebrated Directors in the South, and the film also marks the actor’s Tamil debut since it’s a bilingual, which will automatically expand its reach. Also, Mahesh 23 is carrying more buzz down South than Tubelight.
Tubelight is touted to be a war film with a sensitive human undercurrent, which is the kind of material that Kabir excels at capturing on film. Mahesh 23 is an action-thriller that’ll have Mahesh Babu playing a suave intelligence officer and Murugadoss has assured his fans that Prince will be seen in a never-before seen avatar. That aspect alone should heavily dent Tubelight’s collections in the south. However, the Salman Khan starrer should lead across the rest of the country, and face relatively zero competition in the North. It’s going to be a very interesting clash this Eid.
