Over the past decade or so, multi-starrers have all but gone out of vogue, which is a huge loss for the paying audience. Until the mid-2000s, the paying audience used to be regularly treated to big-budget films starring two or three big names, but with the changing dynamics of the industry, coupled with insanely high acting fees and unwillingness of big names working together, the only real multi-starrer that recently comes to mind is Padmaavat.
Well, three of the top production houses of Bollywood, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Fox Star Studios, and Dharma, have joined hands to bring us Kalank – the biggest multi-starrer in a long, long time. Just get a load of the names that have bee nroped in to star in it: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sanjay Dut – if that cast doesn’t excite you, we don’t know what will. Check out the film’s first-look poster:
Confirming the news, Karan Johar revealed that Kalank was conceived fifteen years ago by him and his deceased father, Yash Johar, but has finally found its footing now. Fitting to the cast involved, the plot revolves around an epic tale set in the 1940s, and will be directed by Abhishek Varman of 2 States fame, which was another joint venture by NGE and Dharma.
“Kalank has been an emotional journey for me. A germ of an idea that I had nearly 15 years ago…a film that was in a pre-production stage helmed by my father…am now proud to pass it on to the extremely capable and visionary hands of our director Abhishek Varman. It’s a beautifully structured story by Shibani Bathija, with an exceptionally fluid narrative and screenplay by Abhishek.”
Calling the film historic in the truest sense, Sajid Nadiadwala disclosed that the story will cross all border, which kind of gives you an idea of where the film will be set, or rather, across which ‘borders’ of which ‘countries’ it’ll be set.
“18th April 2014, 2 States had released…18th April 2019, Kalank begins its journey. This multi-starrer boasts a story that’ll cross all borders, under the capable direction of Abhishek Varman. It’ll be historic in the true sense of the word. I’ m genuinely happy to be back with the team of Fox Star and Karan Johar. This film is special to all of us.”
Here’s what Vijay Singh of Fox Star Studios had to say about the film:
“Our creative and strategic partnership with Dharma Productions and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the power houses of the industry, has been successful and rewarding. Our association with Dharma gave us an excellent opportunity to be associated with 100-crore hits like Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Ae Dil Hain Mushkil, while with BGE, we’ve delivered back-to-back massive grossers – Judwaa 2 nd Baaghi 2. We at Fox Star Studios are proud to be presenting Kalank, a movie with a stellar and power-packed cast. With Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala coming together, it’s going to be a great team to work with and a path-breaker of a movie.”
Kalank will go on floors by April end this year and is slated to release on 19th April 2019.
