Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh is off to a less-than-conducive beginning at the domestic box-office. With an occupancy rate of just 20-25% for the morning shows, the film needed to pick up during the noon and evening shows but that did not happen, which resulted in a day-one collection of Rs. 4.25 crore nett. However, with the night shows displaying an upward trend, all eyes are now fixed on the kind of response the film starts with on day two.
Compared to thrillers released this year, Kahaani 2 is behind Wazir and Neerja, and way behind Rustom (but that film was headlined by a major superstar, and carried tremendous pre-release buzz), and only ahead of Te3n, Madaari, and Love Games, both of which failed misearably at the box-office.
|Film||Day One in Nett (INR)|
|Kahaani 2||4.25 crore|
|Love Games||1.03 crore|
On the plus side, the opening trend of the Vidya Balan-Arjun Rampal starrer is similar to that of the first part, which could encourage its investors to remain positive since that film grew tremendously over the weekend and rest of the week. However, the first installment got excellent reviews and enjoyed incredible word-of-mouth while the reviews for Kahaani 2 are good but not great, and the word-of-mouth is mixed.
In spite of its landing costs being on the lower side, the Sujoy Ghosh film will still have to see a sizeable jump on day two if it has to carve a successful path in the long run. However, with Dear Zindagi still going along nicely in cinemas, that’s going to be easier said than done.
