Jai Gangaajal has performed moderately at the domestic box-office. The Priyanka Chopra starrer has collected Rs. 5.5 crore net pan-India, and judging by the word-of-mouth emerging from the theaters coupled with the trends in the trade, the film looks set for an average first week.
The Prakash Jha directed film had opened to reviews ranging from average to negative, which looks to have halted its progress at the box-office. With 45-55% footfalls on its first day, Jai Gangaajal has taken a much lesser opening that Priyankas Chopras last two releases Bajirao Mastanii (Rs. 12.80 crore) and Dil Dhadakne Do (Rs. 10.53 crore). Its even collected less than half of what her last solo-release, Mary Kom (Rs. 8.40 crore) had put up. The opening is also drastically less when compared to Director Jhas previous film Satyagraha (Rs. 11.21 crore).
After a unanimously loved female-oriented film like Neerja, which released merely two weeks ago, it remains to be seen how the audience takes to Jai Gangaajal in the coming days. The lack of strong content could severely hamper its run at the ticket window. Then again, Priyanka Chopras star appeal and two fairly open weeks till Kapoor & Sons releases could help the films box-office figures improve in the coming days. At the very least, the above two factors may guarantee steady box-office numbers.
The next three to four days will paint a better picture of where Jai Gangaajal is headed.
