“If men can do it, why can’t women?”: Shweta Tripathi on Mirzapur’s masturbation scene

Bollywood Interview

Be it Masaan, Haraamkhor, or the newly released, critically acclaimed web series Mirzapur, Shweta Tripathi has so far been associated with topical, gritty projects in her short career span, and has never failed to impress us with her nuanced performances in them.

However, while most critics and audience members have again showered her with accolades for her act in Amazon Prime Video and Excel Entertainment’s Mirzapur, a certain section of viewers have also embarrassed our society’s mentality yet again by creating a hue and cry about the actresses’s masturbation scene in the show. We recently caught up with Shweta to know her thoughts on the uproar, and she rightfully dismissed the flak while also questioning why voices are raised only when it comes to women embracing their sexuality.

“All the female characters in Mirzapur are progressive, speak their mind, and act on their emotions, which is so important in today’s times, especially when it comes to depicting women from these parts of the country. Also, I see no reason for the masturbation scene to be hyped about because it’s just another normal thing that all humans do. If men can do it, and it can be considered normal for them, then why can’t it be so for women?”

Well said, Shweta. Very, very well said!
