A few days ago, Karan Johar made a grand announcement, where he launched the poster of his upcoming film, Dhadak, the official remake of Marathi film, Sairat, featuring star kids, Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor. But not many are aware that while Janhvi will be making her film debut with Dhadak, Ishaan’s has already completed shooting for his debut feature, Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds, whose world premiere was met with rapturous applause yesterday at IFFI 2017 in Goa.
We recently managed to catch up with Ishaan at the panel discussion of Beyond the Clouds at IFFI, and, needless to say, it was an enlightening experience. Ishann even shared the reason why, unlike most star kids, he chose an international albeit somewhat artsy film over a big, glitzy Bollywood launch, citing
“Honestly for me, it wasn’t much of decision to contemplate over because when an opportunity like this, where you get to work with Majidi sir, comes to an actor, it’s a no-brainer – you just grab on to it. So, when Honey sir, the casting director for the film (Beyond the Clouds) called me, and he asked me to meet with the likes of Majid Majidi and have a small conversation with him, it really was not much of a decision to make after that. I’m a huge fan of cinema itself; I watch a lot of cinema, I have been a delegate at many film festivals – at this festival (IFFI) also, for two years – plus, I’m a huge admirer of his (Majidi’s) work and his films; so, for me, it wasn’t a tough decision to make. I just want to be part of good films; it’s not a very thought-out or calculated decision or planned process when choosing films, where I think whether I should this movie or that to be marketable or accessible to a certain kind of audience. It’s was an instinctive move, and, honestly, it was a total no-brainer.”
Well, it sure looks like Ishaan is making all the right moves even if he isn’t planning them so, and we wish him the very best for the road ahead.
