One of the most-loved franchises of Bollywood returns this Diwali. We’re talking about Golmaal Again, which will hit screens in a few days, and, as expected, the buzz around it has hit a crescendo. The lethal combo of superstar Ajay Devgn and Director Rohit Shetty is being looked forward to again as is the innocuous silly fun that the Golmaal films is known for. The untapped genre of a horror comedy has generate good interest and the trailer, too, has been greatly appreciated. So, let’s stack the advantages and disadvantage of the film against each other, analyze its budget and other economics, and see how much it needs to collect to be called a box-office success.
1.) The brand value – Golmaal is undoubtedly one-of-the-most loved franchises in India, popular all over the country. Belonging to the comedy genre gives it an added push.
2.) The relatively new horror-comedy genre that the film explores has generated good interest.
3.) The trailer has been unanimously appreciated by the masses.
4.) Ajay Devgn is still one of the biggest moviestars in the country, and his name along is enough to draw the audience. Even his last release, Baadshaho, opened very well, but couldn’t sustain in the long run. However, now that he’s back with his favorite Director, Rohit Shetty, we expect the turnout to be humongous.
5.) The Diwali holidays should give a massive boost to the opening and weekend collections as the family audience is expected to come out in huge numbers.
1.) The clash with Secret Superstar could dent the collections somewhat, especially considering that Aamir is a brand all unto himself.
2.) If the word-of-mouth isn’t up to the mark, then Golmaal 4 could suffer big time as clashes like these tend to favor the smaller film when it boils down to content and audience feedback.
3.) The landing costs are on the higher side, which make a fantastic start and positive word-of-mouth imperative.
Considering the aforementioned points, we’re going with an opening-day prediction of Rs. 25-30 crore nett as the film is releasing on the big Diwali holiday, which should draw families in droves. If the word-of-mouth clicks, then there’ll be no stopping the film from touching Rs. 70-75 crore nett during its opening weekend.
|Parameter||Predictions in Nett (INR)|
|Opening Day (Big Diwali Holiday)||25-30 crore|
|Opening Weekend||70-75 crore|
The one aspect that could prove an impediment for Golmaal Again on its road to box-office glory is its high budget of Rs. 80 crore. The distribution cost hasn’t been disclosed yet by Reliance, but it’s bound to be on the higher side considering the overall budget.
|Budget (Inluding Print and Advertising)||80 crore|
Trade analyst Rohit Jaiswal feels that the tide, which was initially in Golmaal 4’s favor in its clash with Secret Superstar, has been brought on an even keel because of the former’s high distribution cost coupled with the fact that the latter is made on a smaller budget and being distributed locally. Also, there’s not an astronomical difference in screen count, with G4 clearly leading in single screens but the division being similar at multiplexes.
“Golmaal 4 has been bought by Relaince Entertainment, whereas Secret Superstar is being distributed by its own local distributors, which has worked in the latter’s favor. Earlier, I was expecting SS to generate 30% business while G4 to do 70% of the business during Diwali. But now, to be honest, it’s looking more like a 55-45% affair. Also, Golmaal Again leads in screen count for single screens, but it’s an even number in multiplexes. That being said, G4 is obviously hot because of its brand and the comedy elemtn. So, my lifetime expectation for the film is 130-135 crore if the word-of-mouth is positive.”

Things are certainly in Golmaal Again’s favor right now because of its recall value, festive release, and the audience’s preference for comedies. But the clash with Secret Superstar and its high landing costs could prove to be a roadblock if the content isn’t well received. Time will tell how its box-office fortunes pan out.
