Deadpool 2 has offered further proof of the kind of inroads Hollywood films are making in India, and especially in Bollywood. The sophomore outing of the ass-kicking, profanity-loving, damn-caring mercenary has opened better (Rs. 11.25 crore nett) than all other Hind films this year excluding Baaghi 2 and Padmaavat, and, overall, it’s taken the fourth-highest opening if we take Avengers: Infinity War into consideration. And these numbers are despite the film receiving an ‘A’ rating on account of being littered with cuss words and gory scenes, which has definitely kept away the family audience.
|Film (2018)||Day One in Nett (INR)|
|Avengers: Infinity War||31.30 crore|
|Baaghi 2||25.10 crore|
|Padmaavat (Day 1 + Paid Previews)||24 crore|
|Deadpool 2||11.25 crore|
|Pad Man||10.26 crore|
|Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety||6.42 crore|
|Black Panther||5.60 crore|
Once again, the collection is equally distributed between the English and dubbed versions (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam), which proves that the film has done quite well even in single screen, and in B and C centers. The opening may be nowhere near as big as Infinity War, but that was always going to be the case. The fact that another Hollywood film, and that, too, an adult one, has taken another double-digit opening, should be reason enough to worry for the Hindi film industry. The superhero subset of the action genre is mounting a tougher challenge with each passing day to Hindi cinema as well as regional film to an extent.
