Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, which released in 2015, was an unmitigated disaster and remains one of Bollywood’s biggest flops till date. Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon, which stars Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles, is fast heading towards becoming the first disaster of 2017; but will Rangoon end up becoming as big a disaster as Rangoon.
In terms of reviews, Bombay Velvet was unanimously ripped apart by the critics and the audience, however, Rangoon received mixed reviews with some critics giving the film a 4 star review.
Budget vs Collections
|Film||Budget||Opening Weekend||Lifetime Collections|
|Bombay Velvet||90 cr||16.10 cr||23.67 cr|
|Rangoon||80 cr||18.22 cr||Expected to be around 23 – 25 cr|
Since Rangoon was made at a comparatively lesser cost and its collections are marginally better than BV, it is expected to fare slightly better; but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Rangoon is headed to become one of the biggest flops of all time.
Both Rangoon and Bombay Velvet had a niche concept; and even if the films had been received well by the target audience, even in the best case scenarios, chances of recovery would have been pretty low. In such cases, budget control is crucial to success of the film.
