Bollywood actresses with the maximum blockbusters

box office

While the leading men of Bollywood get a lot of credit for setting the cash registers ringing, and rightly so (the movie business the world over is, after all, a male-driven industry), our lovely leading ladies, too, deserve a fair share of love for what they bring to such films.

Often, our heroines get overshadowed under the stardom of their male counterparts, even though their fan-following, acting chops, dancing skills contribute significantly to a film’s fortunes. And when we’re talking about love for the women of Hindi cinema whose star-power translate to ticket sale, we aren’t only referring to the Deepikas and Kareenas of today, but also to the Madhuris and Sridevis and right back to the Nargis and Vyjantimala of the black-and-white days, as they’ve all played their part in shaping the Hindi film industry into the potent force that it is today. In fact, the like of Madhuri and Sridevi have, many a time, being the sole driving force behind their film’s fortunes.

Madhuri Dixit stills rules the roost at the top after all these years, with only Kareena Kapoor Khan and Katrina Kaif (critics can say all they want about Katrina, but the lady surely is popular with her fans) being able to match up to her among the current generation. Hema Malini and Kajol fall just shy of them. It’s also worth noting that all of Kajol’s blockbusters have been with Shah Rukh Khan.

Both Anushka Sharma and Sonakshi Sinha have made rapid strides since their debuts, but Deepika Padukone and Sridevi, surprisingly, hitherto have only three blockbusters to their credit. However, with Deepika being the numero uno actress today, she can soon add a few more. The legendary Nargis and Vyjantimala, too, are welcome inclusions on the list.
