Bollywood and politics are two of the prime pillars on which the emotions, imaginations, and dreams of our nation are driven. In some ways, the fields share a lot of similarities, especially in the way a complete unknown can become a hero of the masses overnight or how the fortunes of both politicians and moviestars can change in a flash. It’s no wonder then Hindi cinema has seen some landmark films on politics and politicians from Rajneeti and Sarkar to Gulaal, Aandi, and Shanghai. On that note, let’s take a look at which Bollywood actors will be playing politicians in 2018:
1.) Vidya Balan
The versatile Vidya Balan is set to play Indira Gandhi in an adaptation of journalist Sagarika Ghose’s book Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister. Balan acquired the book rights because she has always wanted to play the Iron Lady on India on screen. The movie will explore issues such as the reasons behind the Emergency in 1975, Gandhi’s failed marriage, her turbulent relationship with her son Sanjay, and her numerous political battles.
2.) Irrfan Khan
One-of-India’s-most-talented actors will be seen as a politician Amazon Prime India’s upcoming political satire show called The Ministry. The web series will take a dig at contemporary India’s corridors of power in political circles, with Irrfan portraying a washed-up, narcissistic Bollywood actor who’s unwittingly appointed as a placeholder culture minister. Despite a crippling bureaucracy, political gaffes, and a team of misfits, his character will be shown as someone who yearns to be loved by the masses.
4.) Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Another gem of an actor in our country will be essaying the titular role of none other than one-of-India’s most-powerful political figures, Balasaheb Thackeray, in the latter’s upcoming biopic. The film, which will be shot in both Hindi and Marathi, will also be dubbed in multiple languages for a worldwide release.
4.) Richa Chadha
The exceptionally beautiful and talented, Richa Chadha, will be seen as a politician in Sudhir Mishra’s Daas Dev, which marries politics with the classic tale of Devdas. Richa’s Paro will be unlike the previous film adaptations of Devdas. She prepared herself for the role of a strong and tough aspiring politician by watching political rallies and how female politicians behave, the nuances of their poise, the speeches among other things.
5.) Anupam Kher
Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who’s already won two National Awards in the past, will be stepping into the shoes of India’s erstwhile Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in a film based on author Sanjay Baru’s book, The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh. The script is allegedly being penned by noted writer/Director Hansal Mehta and will be helmed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.
