Bollywood actors have portrayed a wide range of characters on screen from cops, soldiers, businessmen, and activists, to gangsters, killers, thugs, and politicians. However, the one sphere of life that has rarely been depicted on screen in Hindi cinema is that of teaching. But there have been few exceptions down the years, where actors have left their stamp as onscreen teachers in some brilliantly written roles.
So, let’s take a look at Bollywood’s best teachers whom we’d all love to learn under:
1.) Shammi Kapoor in Professor (1962)
Shammi shone brightly in the eponymous role of a young guy who has to disguise himself as 50-year+professor — the diktat of a matriarch who’s on the lookout of a suitable teacher to home school her two granddaughters
— in order to provide for his family.
2.) Vindo Khanna in Imtihan (1974)
Though inspired from the Sidney Poitier classic, To Sir with Love, Vinod Khanna leaves his mark on the role of a teacher who feels no task is too great to reform a group of rowdy students.
3.) Dharmendra in Dillagi (1978)
Dharmendra as a romantic Sanskrit professor, who tries to clear the chaos that’s keeping him from marrying his colleague, the tough-as-nails chemistry lecturer, essayed by Hema Malini, brings the house down in this sublime comedy.
4.) Shabana Azmi in Sparsh (1980)
Shabana completely nails the part of a teacher for blind students, who falls in love with her visually impaired principal, only to face overwhelming complexities in the relationship, which she overcomes with great struggle to reconnect with the love of her life.
5.) Archana Puran Singh in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Mrs. Briganza was all fun and taught her students about romance through literature. Every student needs a teacher like Mrs. Briganza at some point in their life.
6.) Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na (2004)
Agreed, Sushmita’s role isn’t as demanding or dramatic as some of the others on this list, but who wouldn’t want to be taught by someone who looks like her and dresses in those scintillating chiffon sarees. Truth be told, most of us fondly remember that one gorgeous teacher we’ve had. And if you’re one of the unfortunate who’s never been lectured by a beautiful teacher, well, then, too bad for you.
7.) Aamir Khan in Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Aamir identifies the special needs of a dyslexic student and takes it upon himself to teach him with the care and pace he needs, eventually bringing out the boy’s hidden talents for the world to see. For all intents and purposes, Aamir’s character in the film is the model teacher everyone in the profession could aspire to be like.
8.) Rishi Kapoor in Do Dooni Chaar (2010)
Rishi as a middle-class school teacher, who tries to enhance his family’s standard by saving every penny and buying a car, is too adorable and quirky for words. He’s like every kind of teacher we’ve encountered at various stages of our schooling and college years.
So who among these is your favorite Bollywood teacher?
