Batti Gul Meter Chalu box-office: Shahid Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer opens on a dull note

Bollywood Box-Office

Neither the partial holiday for Moharram nor the star-cast of Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor succeeded in drawing the audience to the theaters for Baati Gul Meter Chalu as the film took a low opening of just Rs. 6.76 core nett, which may look decent on the surface, but is nowhere near as good for a film whose budget is on the higher side and boasts this kind of star value. The film has opened lesser than Shraddha’s last release, Stree, which had a low budget and has gone on to do blockbuster business.

Film Day One Nett Collection (INR)
Stree 6.82 crore
Baati Gul Meter Chalu 6.76 crore

For Shahid, BGMC is his sixth-highest opener, which doesn’t bode well for the film in the long run. The only Shahid film to open above 20 crore had the benefit if a multi-star cast while among his other solo films on the list, only R…Rajkumar, Udta Punjab, and Haider managed half-decent business.

Film Day One Nett Collection (INR)
Padmaavat 24 crore (including paid previews)
Shaandaar 13.10 crore
R…Rajkumar 10.20 crore
Udta Punjab 10.05 crore
Baati Gul Meter Chalu 6.76 core
Haider 6.14 crore
Phata Poster Nikla Hero 6 crore

Director, Shree Narayan Singh’s last film, 2017’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which also revolved around a pertinent social issue plaguing smaller towns and rural areas, took a much better opening. Agreed that had a far bigger star like Akshay Kumar, but it also benefited from a well-received trailer and strong buzz created by reviews and word-of-mouth as opposed to his latest release. If Baati Gul Meter Chalu doesn’t grow two-fold on both Saturday and Sunday, it’s going to be in trouble. However, the reviews and word-of-mouth don’t inspire much confidence.
