A small Assamese film, Village Rockstars, unknown to many, has beaten several popular contenders, including Padmaavat, Pad Man, Raazi, and Manto, to be chosen as India’s official entry this year to the Academy Awards in the Foreign Language Category. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India earlier today and confirmed by Rima Das, the Director of the film, on Twitter.
Village Rockstars revolves around an impoverished girl, who grown up in destitute conditions, learning to fend for herself, but never stops dreaming big and forming her own rock band one day. The entry to the Oscar race isn’t the first big accolade bestowed on the film as it also bagged the Best Feature Film trophy at the 65th National Film Awards earlier this year, along with three other National Awards, including Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist, and Best Editing.
Here’s wishing Village Rockstars all the very best for the journey ahead to the Oscars.
