Alia Bhatt has made rapid strides in no time in Bollywood, and is now considered as one of the best actresses of her generation, with the potential to be an all-time great. She’s also hailed for her fashion sense, effortless style, and bubbly, effervescent personality. But one factor that’s at times overlooked in her career so far is her dominance at the box-office.
Sure, everyone is well aware of her propensity to deliver hit after hit at the box-office numbers, but it’s time we looked beyond the verdict of her films, and dived into the hardcore numbers they generate via ticket sales. And the reason for us wanting to do so is the fact that in a short span, Alia has transformed into a bankable young star who’s as responsible for driving the numbers of her films as her male costars, and in some cases like Highway and 2 States, the credit lies with her even more.
For starters, let’s looks at the box-office report and verdicts of the seven films she has starred in so far.
|Film||Collections in Nett (INR)||Verdict|
|Student of the Year||63 crore||Hit|
|2 States||103.50 crore||Superhit|
|Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania||76 crore||Superhit|
|Kapoor & Sons||73.29 crore||Superhit|
|Udta Punjab||59.57 crore||Semi-Hit|
As you can see, Alia has a staggering hit ratio of 6:1, which pegs her box-office viability at a stunning 85.71%.
No other actress in the history of Indian cinema has had a better commercial start to their careers. Additionally, most of her commercial success are also critically acclaimed, and as mentioned earlier, she’s as big a contributor to her film’s success as her male costars.
In fact, the only actress who comes close to matching her for the initial phase of her career is another young star, who’s started around the same time as Alia – Shraddha Kapoor. Both have done exactly the same number of films till now and are neck-to-neck in the pecking order at the moment, and while Alia has an advantage of a solitary flop as compared to Shraddha’s two, Shraddha has an advantage in terms of her popularity across A, B, and C centers. Here’s how they match up to each other in terms of sheer box-office figures.
|Actress||Hits||Flops||Success||Total BO Collection|
|Alia Bhatt||6||1||85.71%||447.49 crroe|
|Shraddha Kapoor||5||2||71.43%||436.21 crore|
With Dear Zindagi about to release (which looks like a sure-shot winner), we predict the gap in Alia’s populatiy between A, B, and C centers to narrow because many over there would come out to catch the film for Shah Rukh Khan, which would inevitable benefit Alia’s star-meter. If Badrinath Ki Dulhani, which releases next year, also does well, it’ll further enhance her popularity in both metros and smaller towns. For all intents and purposes, Alia looks poised to eventually scale the ladder from box-office princess to box-office queen.
