It’s a whole different ball-game for Rajkummar Rao post Stree, which has skyrocketed his pan-India popularity and done a world of good to his credentials as a leading man in a solo-mainstream film. Every next move of his now is going to be met with more anticipation and enhanced scrutiny. As such, all eyes are now trained on his next release, 5 Weddings, and though it doesn’t look like a typically mainstream film, the first poster and theme promise a lot of commercial elements.
5 Weddings, revolves around a US journalist, played by Nargis Fakhri (the female lead), who travels to India for a magazine feature on Bollywood-themed weddings, only to encounter a cop (Rajkummar), who keeps getting in her way and derailing her work since he’s convinced that journalistic espionage lies behind the true intentions of the magazine article. Along with this fun premise, the film also touches upon the pertinent issue of the South Asian transgender community (known as Hijras in this part of the world), who dance and make ends meet at such weddings.
The film is supported by an accomplished Hollywood cast, including Academy Award nominee Candy Clark and Golden Globe nominee Bo Derek. It’s set to hit screens on 26th October 2018.
